Seaweed-Infused Feed Supplement to Reduce Cattle Methane Emissions

UPL and CH4 Global recently announced a strategic partnership to distribute a seaweed-based feed supplement in five key markets, including India, aimed at reducing cattle methane emissions by up to 90%.

The multi-year agreement targets India, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, which together account for over 40% of the global cattle population, as per UPL’s regulatory filing.

This partnership will focus on promoting CH4 Global’s Methane Tamer, a feed supplement made from Asparagopsis seaweed, through UPL’s established distribution networks and feed formulations.

“Methane is nearly 30 times more harmful to global warming than CO2,” said UPL Chairman and Group CEO Jai Shroff. “Recent reports show the highest methane levels in 800,000 years, so reducing it must be a top priority.”

The initiative addresses the growing pressure on the livestock industry to mitigate its environmental impact, as enteric methane from cattle digestion remains the largest human-driven source of methane emissions globally.

CH4 Global President and CEO Steve Meller added that the partnership with UPL will accelerate the adoption of methane reduction solutions in livestock farming worldwide.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The partnership is set to develop tailored business models for each target market, integrating Methane Tamer into UPL’s existing feed products and capitalizing on the company’s market presence and customer base.
