New service provides timely insights into soybean meal quality
The leader in intelligent nutrition today announced the launch of the NOVUS® Ingredient Assessment Service (NIAS), giving poultry and swine customers a new resource to evaluate the quality of a key feed ingredient.
The service uses Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIR) to estimate trypsin inhibitor (TI) levels in soybean meal. Trypsin inhibitors are recognized anti-nutritional factors that can affect protein digestion and amino acid availability. By delivering timely, standardized insights, NIAS is designed to help producers, nutritionists and feed manufacturers better understand soybean meal variability before the ingredient is added to diets.
The service is currently available to select customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa with plans to expand availability to other regions.
“Ingredient variability is a reality for nutritionists and feed manufacturers. Knowing more about the soybean meal they are working with can support more informed decisions,” says Silvia Peris, NOVUS executive regional technical services manager for EMEA.
Operating models are tailored to fit the customer, depending on the market. This includes partnering with external labs and utilizing customers’ in-house labs.
Along with providing predicted TI values in the soybean meal sample, NOVUS Technical Services experts also offer context on how the TI levels may influence amino acid digestibility and offer recommendations to help address the challenge. Results are compared with information from the NOVUS Global Trypsin Inhibitor Database of more than 3,000 samples, giving customers additional context for monitoring ingredient variability and evaluating supplier consistency over time.
“With NIAS, our customers gain timely information about trypsin inhibitor levels along with technical interpretation from our team. It is another way NOVUS can work alongside customers to help them get more from their feed programs,” Peris says.
The new service reflects over a decade of NOVUS data collection on trypsin inhibitor levels in soybean samples from different regions of the world.
“For over 10 years, NOVUS has compiled data on trypsin inhibitor levels in more than 3,000 soybean samples from customers globally,” says Julien Kanarek, NOVUS senior manager for global feed enzymes. “That work has enabled the development of robust NIR models based on wet chemistry for detecting trypsin inhibitors in grains, seeds, meals and beans. NIAS delivers that expertise to customers, paired with technical support to help them apply the results to their day-to-day operations.”
For poultry and swine producers, the analysis, paired with insights from the local Technical Services team, can result in more informed decision-making about feed source, feed production, and feed additives, which can positively impact animal performance.
