UP Government Promotes Maize as a High-Profit Crop

To boost farmer profits and encourage crop diversification, the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Department is promoting maize cultivation in Lakhimpur district. Compared to Satha paddy, maize offers higher profitability and is in high demand in sectors such as poultry, animal feed, and food processing, ensuring better market prices for farmers.

This season, maize will be cultivated on 1,150 hectares as a Zaid crop. Hybrid seeds will be provided to farmers with a 50% subsidy to encourage participation. In addition, 160 hectares of demonstration farms will be set up, benefiting around 400 farmers. Experts highlight that maize requires lower investment and offers higher yields, potentially doubling farmer profits.

The Agriculture Department also recommends African Tall Maize as an ideal fodder crop for livestock farmers. For those interested in high-demand crops, sowing HM-4 baby corn is a profitable option. Baby corn is popular in salads, soups, pickles, and various snacks like pakoras and koftas.

Arvind Mohan Mishra, Deputy Director of Agriculture, notes that baby corn is nutritious, rich in phosphorus, which is vital for bone health and growth. With growing demand from urban markets and hotels, farmers stand to benefit financially.

To support farmers, the Agriculture Department provides seeds, fertilizers, and technical guidance. Training camps and demonstration programs ensure farmers receive the necessary resources. Experts believe transitioning to commercial crops like maize can significantly boost farmers’ incomes, with government backing and rising market demand promising a more profitable future.
