A joint India-US research project will develop an AI-enabled smart sensing system for precision soybean breeding, supported by a USD 528,137 grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The three-year project will run from October 2026 to September 2029.
Led by Xiaolei Huang, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Memphis, the project involves researchers from US and Indian institutions, including IIT Delhi and ICAR’s National Soybean Research Institute.
The system will integrate smart sensors, wireless networks, drone-based data and AI tools to monitor crop, soil and environmental conditions. Researchers aim to use the data for crop phenotyping, pest and disease management, and yield forecasting, helping soybean breeders make more informed decisions.
The collaboration between the NSF and India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is expected to strengthen soybean productivity while advancing India-US cooperation in agricultural research and digital technologies.
