Kemin Research Points to an Emerging Intestinal Disease in Layers
Kemin Research Published in Poultry Science Identifies Key Brachyspira Species Associated with Avian Intestinal Spirochaetosis (AIS) in India
Wet litter, loose droppings, dirty eggs, and unexplained declines in egg production are challenges frequently encountered in layer farms and are often linked to management, nutrition, or environmental factors. However, emerging intestinal diseases may sometimes be an overlooked part of the picture.
A recent peer-reviewed study led by Dr. R. Chanthirasekaran (RC) of Kemin and published in the internationally renowned journal Poultry Science provides important new insights into Avian Intestinal Spirochaetosis (AIS), an intestinal disease of laying hens caused by Brachyspira species.
Contributing New Knowledge to the Industry
Using advanced molecular diagnostics, PCR testing, and genetic characterization, the study investigated clinically suspected commercial layer flocks from key poultry-producing regions of India. The findings revealed a high frequency of Brachyspira detection in flocks exhibiting intestinal health concerns, reinforcing the need to consider AIS as part of the differential diagnosis when persistent gut health challenges are observed.
From Field Observations to Scientific Evidence
The study found that affected flocks commonly presented with wet litter, loose droppings, vent pasting, dirty eggs, and modest reductions in production performance. The findings highlight that symptoms often regarded as routine management challenges may, in some cases, have an infectious component that warrants further investigation.
The research also observed that detection tended to be higher in older flocks, suggesting that long-cycle layer operations may benefit from increased attention to intestinal health monitoring and diagnostics.
