Andhra Pradesh Secures 200,000 Tonnes of Maize Import Duty Exemption

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that Andhra Pradesh will receive two lakh tonnes of maize under a tariff rate quota (TRQ) without import duties, a move that will significantly benefit the state’s poultry farmers. The announcement followed a meeting in Delhi led by D. Purandeswari, the AP BJP chief and Rajamahendravaram Lok Sabha member, who represented a delegation of poultry farmers.

During the meeting, Purandeswari highlighted the importance of this allocation for the state’s poultry sector, which comprises nearly five crore birds and involves around 3,000 farmers. Approximately 10 lakh people rely on this industry for their livelihoods. The Minister’s commitment to the maize import elicited gratitude from both the MP and the farmers, emphasizing the positive impact on their operations and economic stability.
